Work Structuring Core Principles
Work should be organised around key steps in the process to form whole tasks.
- Benefit - The work needed to achieve the organisation's goal will be done in blocks, (whole tasks), that are streamlined and complete in themselves; can be carried out successfully, and provide a solid foundation on which to build organisational success.
The basic organisational unit should be the Primary Workgroup (of four to twenty people)
- Benefit - The motivation provided by co-operating in achieving a do-able, significant task will be supported by a resilient and equipped workgroup that can be trusted to complete its task successfully.
Each workgroup should include a designated leader.
- Benefit - The resources needed for the work will be allocated correctly, the team members will be led and developed, change will be managed into the work of the team and the team's task will be delivered on time and in full satisfaction of its internal and external customers.
Each leader and his team should, as far as possible, plan and organise the work within their group.
- Benefit - The empowered teams and their leaders will be able to continuously plan their work towards more effective working.
Each workgroup should be able to fully evaluate its performance against agreed standards of excellence.
- Benefit - The empowered teams and their leaders will be able to evaluate their work as they do it, will know how they are performing, will identify and resolve problems early, before they create complexity and cost through the whole organisation.
Jobs should be structured so that workgroup members can personally plan, do and evaluate at least one key step in the process.
- Benefit - Each company member will be motivated by contributing positively to the success of the team and the whole organisation will gain the benefit of employing each individual's mind, motivation and goodwill – not just their hands – maximising the return on investment in each individual.
Personal and structural conditions to encourage team working and participation throughout the organisation should be established.
- Benefit - The natural tendency to work together generated by the structural changes will be enhanced by behaviours that make each team more cohesive and cost effective.
