After gaining an an honours degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics at New College, Oxford, Christian Schumacher first worked in the work study/O&M department of iron and steel company, Stewart & Lloyds. Following that position and two years with an economic consultancy, Christian took up the post of economist to the Iron & Steel Board,
which later became part of British Steel. Within British Steel, he also
worked as part of its Corporate Strategy team and, later within Personnel. It was there that he became increasingly occupied with, and interested in, organisational development and design issues. |

Christian left the British Steel Corporation in 1979 to become an
Industrial Fellow at the London School of Economics. There he continued his researches into work design, as well as practising as a consultant to
several companies in the UK and elsewhere. Work Structuring Limited was founded by Christian in 1986. |
 |
Today, Work Structuring Limited operates in Europe, USA, South Africa,
Australia and elsewhere, in manufacturing industry, the service sector,
health, central government and higher education. |
 |
Christian is the author of two books on work organisation and its
impact on modern society. |
